Insurance for your visa in 2026: which policies actually qualify

Buying the wrong insurance is a common visa rejection. Here's what each type actually requires — and the trap that catches people applying to Spain.

Schengen short-stay: €30,000 minimum

A Schengen tourist visa requires travel-medical insurance with at least €30,000 of coverage for emergency medical care, hospitalization and repatriation, valid across the whole Schengen Area for your full stay.

The Spain residency trap

Watch out: Spain's residency visas (the non-lucrative visa, and often the digital nomad visa) do not accept ordinary travel insurance. They require a Spanish health policy with no copays and full coverage, from an insurer authorized to operate in Spain. This is the single most common mistake — travel insurance that's fine for tourism fails residency.

Nomad, Portugal and expat cover

Digital-nomad visas and Portugal's visas each set their own coverage and validity rules; some accept international nomad policies, others want local cover. Cost depends heavily on your age — and adding US coverage roughly doubles the premium.

Do this: match the policy to your exact visa before you buy — a travel policy for Schengen, a compliant Spanish no-copay policy for Spanish residency — and confirm a live quote by age.
