What insurance do I need for my visa? Requirement & cost
Every visa asks for a different insurance — and picking the wrong one can get you refused. Tell us your case and age, and we'll show what qualifies, what does NOT, and the monthly cost. Including the warning almost nobody gives: travel insurance doesn't work for Spanish residency.

Methodology & data sources
Visa insurance requirements come from official and authoritative sources: the Schengen visa requires a minimum €30,000 covering emergency medical, hospitalization and repatriation, valid across Schengen (EU Visa Code, Reg. 810/2009, Art. 15); Spain's non-lucrative visa requires private insurance from a Spain-authorized insurer with no copay, no waiting periods and repatriation, prepaid one year — which is why travel/nomad policies are rejected; Spain's digital nomad visa requires coverage from a Spain-authorized insurer equivalent to the public system; Portugal D7/D8 requires €30,000 Schengen-wide with repatriation. Costs are typical ranges by age band from provider pricing pages (SafetyWing, Heymondo, Genki, Cigna, GeoBlue and Spanish no-copay insurers), shown as estimates because real price depends on your health, destination and whether you include the US (which roughly doubles it). We only show the options that actually qualify for your case. Our Freshness Keeper checks the requirements and prices against their sources.

Frequently asked questions
Does SafetyWing work for Spain's non-lucrative visa?
No. You need a Spanish no-copay policy (Adeslas/DKV/Sanitas/ASISA). Travel insurance is rejected for residency.
How much coverage does a Schengen visa need?
Minimum €30,000 with emergency medical, hospitalization and repatriation, valid across Schengen. A nomad plan that hits that does qualify here.
How much does it cost per month?
Nomad (SafetyWing) ~$56–$197 by age. Spanish no-copay for the NLV €40–€400+ by age. Adding US roughly doubles it.
Why doesn't travel insurance work for residency?
It's an emergency/accident product — no preventive care, screenings or chronic-illness cover, which Spain requires for residency.
