Do you qualify for Mexican residency by economic solvency?
Mexico lets you get residency by proving income or savings — no job offer needed. The bar is set in UMA, not dollars, and it's higher than most sites admit: the real 2026 income threshold is 680 UMA (~$79,771 MXN/month), not the outdated "300 days of minimum wage." Enter your numbers below and see exactly where you stand.

Worked examples
Retiring couple on Social Security — temporary residency by income
Required: $105,579.00 MXN/month (≈ $5,750–$6,130 USD depending on consulate)
❌ Short by about $44,854 MXN (~$2,585 USD/month). A typical Social Security check often doesn't clear the couple threshold on its own — many applicants add a pension, or switch to the savings path.
How it breaks down
- Base: 680 UMA × $117.31 = $79,770.80 MXN
- + 1 dependent (220 UMA): $25,808.20 MXN
- Total required: $105,579.00 MXN/month
- Your income: $60,725.00 MXN ($3,500 × 17.35)
Remote worker, solo — temporary residency by income
Required: $79,770.80 MXN/month (≈ $4,342–$4,630 USD depending on consulate)
✓ Clears it, with about $6,979 MXN (~$402 USD/month) of cushion. Bring 6 months of statements showing the income lands consistently.
How it breaks down
- Required: 680 UMA × $117.31 = $79,770.80 MXN
- Your income: $86,750.00 MXN ($5,000 × 17.35)
- Margin: +$6,979.20 MXN/month
Savings path, solo — temporary residency by investments
Required: $1,344,372.60 MXN (≈ $73,189–$78,025 USD depending on consulate)
✓ Clears it by about $43,627 MXN (~$2,514 USD). The balance is an average over 12 months, so avoid large recent deposits that look like a top-up.
How it breaks down
- Required: 11,460 UMA × $117.31 = $1,344,372.60 MXN
- Your balance: $1,388,000.00 MXN ($80,000 × 17.35)
- Margin: +$43,627.40 MXN

Methodology & data sources
Mexico grants residency by economic solvency — proving you can support yourself without local work. The requirement is set in UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización), which updates every February 1; for 2026 the daily UMA is $117.31 MXN. This tool applies the current UMA multipliers published across Mexican consulates and the embassy in Spain: temporary residency needs 680 UMA of net monthly income (last 6 months) or an average balance of 11,460 UMA (last 12 months); the direct permanent route by solvency exists only for pensioners/retirees, at 1,140 UMA of monthly pension or 45,850 UMA in savings. Accompanying dependents add 220 UMA each for the temporary category. We compute the exact MXN figure (UMA × multiplier) and show the USD range that real consulates publish, because each consulate converts at its own daily exchange rate — so the dollar amount you'll be asked for varies a few percent by consulate and by day. Everyone who isn't a retiree reaches permanent residency after 4 years as a temporary resident, or through family ties, the points system, or humanitarian grounds. Our Freshness Keeper re-checks the UMA every February and the multipliers on each sweep.

Frequently asked questions
Is it income OR savings — or both?
Either one qualifies on its own. Income needs 6 months of statements; savings needs 12 months of average balance. If income falls short, the savings path is often the fallback.
Does US Social Security count?
Yes, as income — but a single check often doesn't clear the couple threshold. Combine it with a pension, or use savings.
Why is the dollar amount different everywhere I look?
Because the real requirement is in UMA and each consulate converts to dollars at its own daily rate. Trust the MXN figure; confirm your consulate's exact USD before the appointment.
Do investment and retirement accounts count as savings?
Generally yes for the savings path, though rules vary by consulate. Bring statements covering the full 12-month window.
